Québec — Former Member, Gilles Grégoire, who was one of the founders of the Parti québécois, died Wednesday at the age of 80 at Laval Hospital of Quebec.

Born in Québec in 1926, he quickly developed a taste for politics, watching his father J.-Ernest Grégoire acting as Mayor of Québec from 1934 to 1938, then as Member from Montmagny in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec.

A graduate in Law, Gilles Grégoire rapidly acquired a feel for politics. Before moving into the nationalist sphere he had worked on the federal scene being elected Member from Lapointe under the Social Credit banner in 1962.

He was re-elected in 1963 under the same banner before following his leader Réal Caouette to the Ralliement créditiste where he served as parliamentary leader. He resigned from the party in 1966 to form the Ralliement national, a nationalist party of which he became the leader.

Two years later, he allied with René Lévesque, then leader of the Mouvement souveraineté-association, to found the Parti québécois, which owes him its name. He occupied the vice-presidency for four years and was defeated in the county of Jonquière in 1970. He made a come-back as Member in 1976 on being elected in the county of Frontenac.

After being re-elected in Frontenac in 1981, he came to a sad end of his career on being iplicated in a sex scandal with young under-aged girls. He was sentenced to two years less a day in prison after being found guilty and served a few months of prison in Orsainville.

Un service religieux est prévu demain à 14h en l’église Saint-Louis-de-France, à Sainte-Foy. L’inhumation aura lieu au cimetière Belmont.

A religious service is planned for tomorrow at 14:00 in the Church of Saint-Louis-de-France, in Sainte-Foy. Burial will take place at the Belmont cemetery.

He was an elected Member of Parliament without the least clue that employees do not need permission of management to form a labor union.

His attempt to address a conference on state planning and public ownership was (almost) laughed off the podium by his opponent, Jean Marchand, and students in the audience.

He was a visible co-founder with Rene Levesque of the Communist Parti-Quebecois whose true origin can be hunted down in a secret committee on Friday nights at Power Corporation of Canada in 1967.

A prison term on charges involving sexual (molestation) of under-aged girls put an end to his political career.
